Palm trees, Art Deco, and a city that refuses to sleep
Miami is the United States' most tropical and internationally minded city — a subtropical metropolis where Latin American culture, Caribbean flavours, and American ambition intersect on a glamorous stage of palm-fringed beaches and pastel Art Deco buildings. More than half the city's population speaks Spanish as a first language; Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Russian are equally present. Miami is not so much a melting pot as a mosaic — each culture vivid, distinct, and delicious.
South Beach is the iconic image: the Ocean Drive strip of 1930s Art Deco hotels, the white sand beach lined with lifeguard towers painted in sherbet colours, the Versace Mansion (now a hotel), the Bass Museum of Art. But Miami Beach is only one of many identities. The Design District is global luxury fashion headquarters. Wynwood's graffiti murals have transformed a warehouse district into one of the world's most photographed outdoor galleries. Coconut Grove is lazy waterfront lunches and sailboats.
Miami also serves as the gateway city for the Florida Keys and the Caribbean. The Overseas Highway south to Key West — 113 miles of bridges skimming over turquoise water — is one of America's great drives. Everglades National Park, a two-hour drive away, offers airboat rides through alligator-dense sawgrass prairies. Cuba is 90 miles offshore and, while politically distant, culturally very close — Calle Ocho in Little Havana is the cultural bridge.
December – April: Dry, warm, and the most popular season. Art Basel Miami Beach (early December) is the city's cultural highlight.
November & May: Shoulder prices with still-pleasant weather.
June – October: Hot (32–35 °C), humid, and hurricane season. But prices drop dramatically and the beach is uncrowded.
Art Basel Miami Beach (first week of December) is the city's best week — extraordinary art, parties, and energy — but hotels triple in price.

The Art Deco Historic District, Ocean Drive nightlife, Lincoln Road shopping, and the beach itself. Crowded but beautiful.
The world's largest outdoor street art museum — 70+ murals on every surface. Now also home to galleries, craft cocktail bars, and excellent restaurants.
Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street) with its domino parks, Cuban coffee windows, cigar rollers, and the Viernes Culturales (Cultural Fridays) monthly street festival.
Pressed sandwich of ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban bread. Versailles on Calle Ocho is the institution; argue with any Cuban-American about whether they're right.
Miami has a large Peruvian community and therefore extraordinary ceviche. Cvi.che 105 downtown has been the benchmark for years.
Seasonal (October–May), sustainable, and uniquely Floridian — the claw is removed and the crab returned to sea. Joe's Stone Crab has been serving them since 1913.
A thimble of espresso sweetened with sugar whipped into the first drops of coffee. Drunk at a ventanita (walk-up window) for less than $2. The city's fuel.
Griot (fried pork), riz et pois (rice and beans), and pikliz (spicy pickled vegetables). Little Haiti along NE 2nd Avenue has the best and most affordable restaurants.
Miami is car-dependent by design. Most visitors rent a car or rely heavily on Uber/Lyft — the public transit system (Metrorail, Metromover, buses) is improving but not comprehensive. South Beach is walkable and bikeable (Citi Bike). The Metromover is a free automated rail loop around downtown and Brickell — excellent for that area. The free trolley system covers Wynwood, Little Havana, and Coconut Grove on specific routes. Parking in South Beach is scarce and expensive.
Hurricane shutters on buildings and a hurricane preparedness app are sensible precautions June–October.
Happy hour in Miami is serious: many Brickell and Wynwood bars offer 50% off cocktails 5–8pm weekdays.
The beach is free everywhere in Miami-Dade County — you pay for a chair, not the sand.
Uber Pool is impractical — Miami traffic can make a 2-mile trip take 30 minutes during rush hour. Budget for this.
November to April is peak season — dry, warm (22–28 °C), and ideal. Art Basel Miami Beach (early December) is the city's most exciting week. Avoid June–October for intense humidity and hurricane risk, though prices drop significantly.
Average round-trips to Miami (MIA) run around $250. MIA is a major American Airlines hub with competitive fares from across the Americas and Europe — one of the most affordable gateways into Florida.
Same as any US destination — ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) for citizens of 42 Visa Waiver Program countries at $21 (apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov), or a B-2 tourist visa for other nationalities from a US embassy.
Three to four days covers South Beach's Art Deco district, Wynwood street art, and Little Havana. Add two days for a Florida Keys road trip (Key West is 3.5 hours south via the Overseas Highway) or an Everglades airboat tour.
South Beach, Brickell, Wynwood, and the tourist areas are very safe. Avoid the neighbourhoods of Overtown, Liberty City, and Little Haiti at night. Standard urban awareness — don't leave valuables in cars, stay on well-lit streets — applies.
Miami is famous for South Beach's Art Deco architecture, Wynwood's outdoor street art murals, Cuban culture and food in Little Havana, the Everglades, year-round beach weather, international fashion and nightlife, and Art Basel Miami Beach each December.
