An island kingdom with ancient soul
Manama, the capital of the tiny island Kingdom of Bahrain, punches wildly above its weight. Connected to Saudi Arabia by the 25-kilometre King Fahd Causeway, this archipelago nation of just 1.5 million people has been a trading hub for over 4,000 years — the ancient Dilmun civilisation flourished here, and Bahrain was famous as the centre of the Gulf pearl trade long before oil was discovered. Today, the Bahrain Fort (Qal'at al-Bahrain), a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits on an archaeological mound where layers of settlement stretch back to 2300 BCE.
Modern Manama blends Gulf modernity with a relaxed, cosmopolitan atmosphere that sets it apart from its larger neighbours. The Bahrain World Trade Center, with its dramatic wind turbines bridging twin towers, anchors a skyline that is impressive without being overwhelming. The Bahrain National Museum and Beit Al Quran offer deep dives into the island's history and Islamic heritage. But Manama's real charm lies in its human scale — you can walk the old souqs of Bab al-Bahrain, eat at a packed seafood restaurant on the waterfront, and toast the sunset from a rooftop bar, all in the same evening.
Bahrain is also the most socially liberal of the Gulf states, with a well-established bar and restaurant scene, a Formula 1 Grand Prix that draws international crowds every spring, and a thriving arts community centred on the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities. The Tree of Life — a 400-year-old mesquite tree standing alone in the southern desert with no apparent water source — has become an unlikely symbol of Bahrain's own tenacity. For travellers seeking a Gulf experience without the sensory overload of Dubai or the restrictions of Saudi Arabia, Manama is the sweet spot.
November – March: Pleasant temperatures (18–25 °C) and the Formula 1 Grand Prix (usually March). Peak tourist season.
October & April: Still comfortable, less crowded, and good hotel deals available.
May – September: Hot and humid (35–45 °C). Outdoor sightseeing is challenging, but hotel rates plummet.
The Bahrain Grand Prix weekend (March) is electrifying but expensive. For a calmer visit, late November through January is ideal.

The historic gateway to the old city. The covered souq behind the iconic arch sells gold, spices, textiles, and perfumes in a wonderfully chaotic maze.
The modern waterfront. Bahrain Financial Harbour and World Trade Center towers define the skyline, while the Corniche promenade offers sunset walks and seafood restaurants.
Manama's creative district. Art galleries, independent restaurants, craft cocktail bars, and Bahrain's best nightlife cluster in this walkable neighbourhood.
Bahrain's signature fish dish — hammour or safi cooked with spiced rice, dried limes, and baharat. The island's answer to biryani.
Sweet rice cooked with date molasses and sugar, often served alongside grilled fish. A uniquely Bahraini combination of sweet and savoury.
Sweetened vermicelli noodles topped with a thin saffron omelette — a traditional Bahraini breakfast that visitors instantly adore.
An intensely aromatic, gelatinous sweet flavoured with saffron, cardamom, rosewater, and nuts. Every family has its own recipe.
Bahrain's fish market serves the freshest hammour, shrimp, and crab in the Gulf. Many vendors will grill your selection on the spot.
Manama is compact enough that taxis and ride-hailing apps (Careem, Uber) will handle most journeys for under 3 BHD. There's no metro, but city buses run basic routes. The King Fahd Causeway connects Bahrain to Saudi Arabia (bring your passport). For exploring the island — Bahrain Fort, the Tree of Life, Al Areen Wildlife Park — renting a car is practical and affordable. Traffic is manageable by Gulf standards, and most attractions have free parking.
Bahrain is more relaxed than neighbouring states, but dress modestly in souqs and religious areas.
Alcohol is freely available in licensed hotels and standalone bars — Adliya has the best nightlife strip.
The Bahrain International Circuit offers year-round experiences, not just during F1 weekend — drag nights and desert karting are popular.
Visit the Bahrain Fort at sunset when the light turns the ancient stones golden against the bay.
