Where happiness is a way of life
Fiji is an archipelago of more than 330 islands scattered across the South Pacific, roughly 2,000 kilometres north of New Zealand. Only about a third of the islands are inhabited, leaving vast stretches of untouched coral reef, dense tropical rainforest, and white-sand beaches that look like they were designed for a desktop wallpaper. The two largest islands — Viti Levu and Vanua Levu — hold most of the population and infrastructure, while the outer island groups like the Yasawas and Mamanucas offer the barefoot-luxury resort experience Fiji is famous for. The water visibility here regularly exceeds 30 metres, and the soft coral reefs — particularly the Rainbow Reef between Taveuni and Vanua Levu — rank among the finest dive sites on Earth.
But Fiji is far more than its beaches. Fijian culture is one of the warmest and most welcoming on the planet. The word 'Bula!' — shouted with genuine enthusiasm by almost everyone you meet — means 'life' and doubles as a greeting, a toast, and a philosophy. Village visits offer a window into a communal way of life that has persisted for centuries: the sevusevu kava ceremony, where visitors present a bundle of dried yaqona root to the village chief, is a deeply respectful ritual that opens the door to shared stories, feasting, and sometimes a meke dance performance. The Indo-Fijian community, descended from labourers brought during the colonial era, adds another rich cultural layer — their temples, festivals, and cuisine are woven into the national fabric.
For travellers, Fiji offers a remarkable range of experiences within a compact geographic area. You can surf world-class reef breaks at Cloudbreak, hike to hidden waterfalls in the Nausori Highlands, zip-line through rainforest canopy on the Coral Coast, or simply drift between islands on a budget backpacker boat. The food is fresh and uncomplicated — kokoda (raw fish marinated in coconut cream and lime), lovo feasts cooked in an earth oven, and tropical fruits picked the same morning. Fiji's international airport at Nadi makes it one of the most accessible South Pacific destinations, with direct flights from Australia, New Zealand, the US West Coast, and Asia.
July – September: Dry season with comfortable temperatures (25–28 °C) and calm seas. Peak pricing and bookings.
May – June & October – November: Shoulder months offer great weather, fewer tourists, and better resort deals.
December – April: Wet season brings tropical downpours and occasional cyclones, but lush landscapes and significantly lower prices.
August is ideal — dry, warm, and perfect for diving. Humpback whales pass through Fijian waters between July and October.

A purpose-built resort island connected to Nadi by a short causeway. Five-star hotels, an 18-hole golf course, and the main marina for island-hopping tours to the Mamanucas.
A chain of about 20 small islands west of Nadi — the postcard Fiji. Cloudbreak surf break, Castaway Island, and the island where 'Cast Away' was filmed are all here.
A stretch of coastline along the Queens Highway known for snorkelling, budget-friendly resorts, and cultural attractions like the Kula Eco Park and Sigatoka Sand Dunes.
Fiji's signature ceviche — fresh reef fish marinated in lime juice and coconut cream with tomato, onion, and chilli. Served chilled in a coconut shell.
A traditional earth-oven feast where chicken, pork, fish, and root vegetables are wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked on heated stones underground for hours.
Indo-Fijian flatbread filled with curried vegetables, chicken, or lamb. A ubiquitous street food found in every town and market across Fiji.
A dense, sweet dessert made from grated cassava, coconut cream, and sugar — baked until golden. A staple at every Fijian celebration.
Not food but an essential cultural experience — ground yaqona root mixed with water and drunk from a communal bilo (coconut shell) in a circle. Earthy, slightly numbing, deeply social.
Fiji's main island Viti Levu has a good bus network, with express buses running between Nadi and Suva along the Kings Road (north) and Queens Road (south). For the outer islands, small propeller planes operated by Fiji Airways connect Nadi to Taveuni, Savusavu, and other destinations. Fast catamarans and ferries serve the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains from Port Denarau marina — the Yasawa Flyer is the backpacker lifeline. Taxis are metered in towns but agree on a fare for longer trips. Rental cars are available on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu; driving is on the left. Water taxis between resorts are common in the island groups.
Always bring a sevusevu (gift of kava root) when visiting a village — it's a sign of respect and available at any local market.
Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged — Fiji's coral reefs are fragile and among the world's most biodiverse.
Fiji time is real — things move at a relaxed pace. Embrace it rather than fight it.
Pack a sulu (sarong) — it's the most versatile item you'll carry and required for village visits and some temples.
