Three oceans, one mountain, and a city unlike any other
Cape Town is one of the world's most dramatically situated cities, pinned between Table Mountain — a flat-topped massif that dominates the skyline like a natural cathedral — and two oceans. The cold Atlantic laps the western beaches; the warmer Indian Ocean curves around the eastern coast. The Cape Peninsula, on which the city sits, is one of the world's five Mediterranean climate biodiversity hotspots, home to more plant species per square kilometre than the Amazon rainforest.
The city carries a complex, layered history. The V&A Waterfront and the Cape Winelands represent its European colonial inheritance. The District Six Museum and Langa Township tell the story of apartheid with unflinching honesty. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most profound historical visits in Africa. Cape Town is a city actively reckoning with its past while building something more equitable — the process is incomplete, visible, and important to witness.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Cape Town is a paradise. Table Mountain can be hiked in 2–3 hours or reached by rotating cable car. The Cape Peninsula's Chapman's Peak Drive is one of the world's great coastal roads. Boulders Beach hosts an African penguin colony you can swim with. Shark cage diving with great whites operates from nearby Gansbaai. The Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek) are 45 minutes from the city and among the world's finest wine regions.
November – March (Southern Hemisphere summer): Hot, dry, and the most popular season. December–January book up far in advance.
April – May & September – October: Warm days, occasional showers, good prices, and smaller crowds.
June – August: Wet and cooler (10–18 °C) but the most atmospheric for a fire-warmed winelands lunch.
Table Mountain cloud cover (the 'tablecloth') is most frequent in summer afternoons. Take the cable car in the morning for the clearest views.

The redeveloped Victorian harbour with world-class restaurants, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.
The historically Cape Malay neighbourhood of vividly painted houses on a cobbled hillside — the most photographed street in Cape Town and an active community.
The creative district: Cape Town's gallery scene, the Old Biscuit Mill Saturday market (mandatory), craft breweries, and design studios.
The South African barbecue — more sociable ritual than cooking method. Boerewors sausage, lamb chops, chicken peri-peri, and charred mielies (corn cobs) over open coals.
The Cape Malay national dish: minced spiced meat baked with an egg custard topping. Sweet, aromatic, and deeply comforting — usually served with yellow rice and chutney.
Aromatic, mildly spiced, slightly sweet curries developed by the Cape Malay community. The Biesmiellah restaurant in Bo-Kaap is the institution.
A sticky, sweet, apricot jam sponge pudding served with cream or custard. The South African dessert found on every restaurant menu south of the Limpopo.
West Coast crayfish (rock lobster), snoek (traditional smoked fish), black mussels, and oysters from Saldanha Bay — all caught locally and served at the V&A.
Cape Town is car-dependent for most sightseeing — the Peninsula, Winelands, and many attractions require driving or organised tours. The MyCiti bus network covers the City Bowl, Waterfront, and some beach suburbs well. Uber operates reliably and cheaply by Western standards. The Cape Town Tourism hop-on hop-off bus covers the tourist circuit. Walking is excellent around the City Bowl, Waterfront, and the Company's Garden.
Load-shedding (scheduled power cuts) is a reality in South Africa. Check the Eskom schedule and carry a portable charger.
Do not leave valuables visible in parked cars, especially at nature areas and viewpoints.
Sunscreen and layers are both essential — the UV index is extreme even on overcast days, and the south-easter wind makes conditions change rapidly.
Tipping 10–15% in restaurants is standard; tipping car guards (informal parking attendants) R5–10 is customary.
November to March (Southern Hemisphere summer) offers warm, dry weather ideal for beaches, hiking, and the winelands. May to September is cooler and wetter but prices are lower, gardens are lush, and whale watching (June–November) is excellent.
Average round-trips to Cape Town (CPT) run around $750. Direct flights from London (11 hours on British Airways and South African Airways), Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Dubai, and Johannesburg serve Cape Town well.
US, UK, EU, and most Western nationals visit South Africa visa-free for 90 days. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required if transiting through yellow fever endemic countries. Passports must be valid for 30 days beyond your departure date and have 2 blank pages.
Five to seven days covers Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, Robben Island, and a Winelands day trip. Ten days adds the Garden Route (one of the world's great coastal drives), a safari at Aquila or Sanbona, and the Cederberg Wilderness Area.
Cape Town has areas of genuine safety concern — the city has high inequality and crime statistics. Tourist areas (Waterfront, Gardens, Sea Point, Camps Bay) are safe with normal precautions. Avoid leaving valuables in cars at nature sites. Township tours should be arranged through reputable operators.
Cape Town is famous for Table Mountain (flat-topped, 1,086m, cableway accessible), Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa, Boulders Beach penguins, and the Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.
